His timing certainly is interesting.
The general consensus is that there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that he’ll try to get his old seat back. Serving as an officer on the RMS Titanic isn’t the best location from which to further one’s naval career.
This must be a hard tease for local Republican faithfuls.

He’s running for something – the question is what. He’s got a rather large war chest (talk about something that needs campaign finance reform, the amount of money politicians can hold on to after they leave office).
Unless Voinivich retires, I don’t see Portman running for senate or governor. They know they’d be wasting time and a lot of money running against Strickland. So either Voinivich is retiring, taking his ball and going home because it’s no fun being in the minority, or Portman is running against Schmidt in the primary. Jean doesn’t seem like the type to step aside for the good of the party. Nor do her moonbat crazy supporters. So the republican primary looks like repeat of the last two. Circle shoot, anyone? Get out the commercial size popcorn popper,
DG,
I have to agree. When I first saw he was leaving OMB I immediately figured he will spend a few months out of the spotlight and then BOOOOM..file for the 2nd district seat.
If he does, even with the Republican backlash, he could easily beat MJ in the primary, and surely could beat Vic.
I can hope and pray.
And for the record, I LOVE the comment “moonbat supporters”.
I am certain it will be pure entertainment!
Geez, reading the Enquirer article (Wilkinson and Rulon) regarding Portman:
“Becker, and other Republicans, also see Portman as a potential 2008 vice presidential candidate.
“A (Fred) Thompson-Portman ticket; that works for me,” Becker said.
Portman on Tuesday downplayed the vice presidential candidate suggestion: “I don’t think that’s likely to happen,” he said.”
Lordly.
John Becker usually has a good feel about the climate….makes one really wonder!!!
Angry:
I prefer moonbat to bat(excrement) crazy. I have high standards to uphold nor do I wish to risk offending our dear editor and having one of my comments banished. I couldn’t live down the shame.
The republicans will have a hard time getting someone to sacrifice themselves to run for VP. Their candidates for president are beyond weak, just pathetic. They would have to find someone even more moonbat crazy (I put that in for you, Angry) than the presidential candidate. Of course, there are a lot of those types in the party, they just don’t want to ruin their political careers. Those right wing think tanks can only absorb so many unemployed neocon and other republicans. They aren’t qualified to do much else.
DG,
I have to agree with your comments on the candidates for the Republican party. I cannot find ONE right now that I feel could be a decent candidate for President.
As for Portman being VP; even HE is not THAT crazy …… yet.
I vote for him to put his hat into the ring for the 2nd District to reclaim the seat lost to the looney ineffective Schmidt.
Could it be that the national republican back room boys (that giant brain trust) begged Portman to try to hold the 2nd for them. What else is Portman qualified to do? He won’t get a state university presidency now that Strickland is governor. I am leaning toward Voinivich retiring. He seems to just not care anymore and has some awareness of how bad they messed up. He’s been trained so well to vote for the administration’s policy that he can’t go against his training. He may acknowlege the problem out loud but he can’t vote against them. So rather than go down in defeat, he’ll retire. Portman resigned to try to distance himself from this administration (fat chance) and to get ready to run for one of the two. Welcome to DeWine world, Rob.
