Money numbers are out on the 2nd and it looks like both candidates are coming up dry. Right now Vic Wulsin has $24,564 cash on hand compared to Schmidt’s $17,509. Compare that to Cranley in the 1st who’s got $775,757 cash on hand.
Jean Schmidt is about as vulnerable as she’s going to get, so there’s a lot of incentive for Wulsin to start hauling some serious behind. The Wulsin campaign also needs to be ready for the possibility that if things start looking really dire for the Congresswoman she’ll just loan herself another $200,000 or so.

If you would like to contribute Vic’s campaign, I have set up an ActBlue page at http://www.noschmidt.com
Although it may seem like it, Ohio Second is not a rich district. It has Brown County, Pike County, Scioto County, and Adams County, which have some of the poorest neighborhoods in the state. We need someone who will take care of all the citizens of the district. Somebody who does public health already. Not somebody who does all her shopping at Sak’s. (Where does Mean Jean even find those ugly clothes at Sak’s? The person who sometime waits on me at Sak’s also waits on Jean and her sister. She can’t stand them.)
We need Vic Wulsin. She set up an organization to fight AIDS in Africa. She has done public health. She’s a good person.
OK folks, I realize Wulsin is “healthcare” rich. But let’s get real. How is HEALTHCARE going to bring improved economic development to those counties?
For example, my wife and I were in Portsmouth in April. Mind you, I am an born OH resident, and have never lived outside of OH…we spent over 2 hours looking at the murals on the flood wall…they were IMPRESSIVE. Now you tell me, how is healthcare going to bring folks to Portsmouth to see the murals…to spend a day trip visiting Portsmouth and finding out about the shoelace factory; the river port? Come ON.
Yes healthcare is very important. But how about the development and improvement of the infrastructure supporting those counties. How about building up 32 to attract industries to build…give good access to the area, quick access, and I believe the locals can attract business.
How is healthcare going to do that?
Building an organization to fight AIDS in Africa is substantial, but show me how Vic will take the leasons learned from that and improve our economic conditions in those counties….THEN she will be a force to be in the campaign.
WOW No PAC money for Wulsin?
He poll numbers will make the big money look at this race. If she can raise a lot in a short time, they’ll really support her. This is money she has on hand, not what has been promised her. I think it’s going to start coming in and I hope people here contribute.
Moderate: I don’t know what you expect Vic to do, she’s committed to bring jobs here and you only have 2 choices. Do you think Schmidt will do a better job or Wulsin? Come on, I know you know the answer…
Vic will not support bad trade agreements, bad fiscal policies and bad tax policies that get in the way of job creation. And healthcare has a lot to do with bringing industry to Ohio. If healthcare is off corporations’ backs, it will bring labor costs down. It will keep more money in the working classes’ pockets. It has a lot to do with the economy here.
Cmon now Mod….you’re asking how healthcare is going to bring peace to the middle east. Now econmic growth is your thing..thats cool…but dont cheapen this issue because its not your thing. Healthcare is her thing. At least shes got one.
Glad you enjoyed the murals, Mod. I live right outside of Portsmouth and they never cease to impress me, either.
As a history buff, I also like the murals and am fascinated with the early history of Portsmouth and surrounding areas.
So Mod, it looks like you have a new nickname. It looks good on you! Your comments about healthcare and economic growth have made me curious. To what degree is there a trade-off between the two objectives and to what degree are they complementary. As a recovering economist, I strongly believe in the synergy between these two goals.
Here’s a District 1 example based on an economic impact study of the Children’s Hospital Medical Center: for every dollar the Children’s Hospital Medical Center spends on patient care, research and education generates an additional $1.16 throughout the Cincinnati region in jobs, tax revenues and other economic benefits. They are attracting almost $200 million in grants and visitor spending.
I think this is a subject worth talking through. Economic development is a HUGE issue for this district and a priority that I hope we can agree on.
This Mother Jones article comes to mind when I talk about the 2nd being a “rich” district:
Yep. Indian Hill is a super rich neighborhood. Not everybody in Indian Hill is super rich, tho. People like Carl Linder, who contributes a lot to Rethugs, are. People like Stan Chesley, who contributes a lot to Dems, are. It’s an extremely small part of Ohio Second. Take a look at Adams County sometime.
I love the murals in Portsmouth, too. I go to Portsmouth on business a few times a year, and I always take a look.
DG…my apologies for being late in responding I have been out of town for business and soooo busy no time to view OH02. Do I think Schmidt will do a better job than Vic? Who has the experience in government Jean or Vic? Who has the political saavy to handle politics? Both go to Schmidt.
BUT do I think she will do a better job for the residents of the second district…NOPE NOPE NOPE. She will focus on the PACs and special intrests…hell she pulled 40 percent of her funds from PACs….
What do I expect Vic to do….SPEAK THE MESSAGE!
Debra…first off thank you for that compliment…I WILL WEAR THE NEW NICKNAME PROUDLY!
I do understand that healthcare can and will indeed spur the economy, but that is all I am hearing…there is MORE to the economy than health care. We need to focus on the NON healthcare issues for economic development too!
It does appear we feel economic dev is important…now we MUST get Vic to SPEAK THE MESSAGE about it. HOW is she going to help spur the growth.
I am sure we will be saying more!
Mod:
DeLay has a ton of government experience and is the ultimate savy politician. Does he do a good job, would you vote for him? I don’t follow your logic. I would agree that an experienced, ethical representative who voted in the best interests of her constituents is better that a newbie, but that’s not the choice we have.
DG
EXACTLY!!!!!! HELL NO I WOULD NOT VOTE FOR DeLay!!!!
You said it best “an experienced, ethical representative who voted in the best interests of her constituents is better that a newbie, but that’s not the choice we have.”
So we agree. Jean is NOT the best choice. Please please VIC…show me the way. Give me some sustance on the issues (and YES healthcare can be one)so I would feel it is the RIGHT thing to do and vote newbie versus schrunchie!
That’s it – the new slogan. A newbie not a schrunchie!
But Mod, repectfully, you’re starting to sound whiny. You know there is only one real choice in this if you expect any change in Washington.
