Mrs. Editor previously wrote about the first part of the Strickland fundraiser at Paul Hackett’s house. I attended the second, bigger party at Livingston Lodge, a historical cabin, and it was an incredible evening- the kind of event that reinvigorates your idealism in a climate of cynicism.

Paul and Suzi Hackett invited me to organize the presence of young democrats. Though the admission price was $150, young people were allowed to pay at a reduced price of $20. The chance to see and interact with John Edwards, Ted Strickland, and Paul Hackett was a huge draw to me and many of my Democratic peers. A warm thank you must be extended to Paul and Suzi for making this happen.

The net effect was that Ted Strickland and Dr. Wulsin recruited about 15 young, energetic, intelligent people to their campaigns. I don’t know a single person who came away from last night anything but revved up about politics in Ohio.

Edwards was obviously the big draw, for reasons not limited to the sentiments expressed by Mrs. Editor. He talked about America’s obligation to provide moral leadership in the international community, discussing his key issue of poverty. I especially appreciated his comments on the Sudanese genocide. Though he had to leave early, the Senator was gracious enough to take a picture with us.

For many, this event provided an introduction to Ted Strickland. And he couldn’t have left a better impression. His speech was, as usual, highly impressive– tapping into just the right combination of outrage and hope. Afterwards, the Congressman took the time to talk with everybody, and he’s a seasoned pro at person-to-person interaction. He looks you right in the eye and listens to what you have to say. He has the stature to become the next governor and the humility to engage.

Paul Hackett also stepped outside to chat with us. To this day, I don’t know of a warmer and more engaging political figure. For most of my friends, it was their first time meeting Paul, and judging by their comments thereafter, he left an inspiring effect on them.

Politics is so much about personality and the ability of people to inspire others through a simple connection. The event last night exemplifies that basic and vital component of politics.
