The Republican side of the primary continues to be the most dramatic. After weeks of bad press for Congresswoman Jean Schmidt it’s time for Bob McEwen to be on the receiving end.
The Enquirer today came out with a pair of in depth stories on McEwen, detailing his recent career as a Washington lobbyist as well as the continuing questions of his residency. McEwen campion The Whistleblower was quick to label them as smears and hit pieces in tomorrow’s issue. Blogger Axinar came down on the side of McEwen really being a resident of Virginia.
While the general information contained in the pieces is nothing new, one specific bit did stand out:
…McEwen, who served on the House Intelligence Committee while in Congress, said most of his lobbying has been for international clients, such as the Republic of Uzbekistan, which hired the firm in 2002 to help the country secure U.S. aid after it helped with the war on terror in Afghanistan. “We could not have done the operation in Afghanistan without the cooperation of Uzbekistan,” McEwen said.
Uzbekistan has a very troubled recent history. From the Wikipedia:
…credible non-government human right watchdogs, such as IHF, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, as well as United States Department of State and Council of the European Union define Uzbekistan as “an authoritarian state with limited civil rights” and express profound concern about “wide-scale violation of virtually all basic human rights”. According to the reports, the most widespread violations are torture, arbitrary arrests, and various restrictions of freedoms: of religion, of speech and press, of free association and assembly. The reports maintain that the violations are most often committed against members of religious organizations, independent journalists, human right activists, and political activists, including members of the banned opposition parties. In 2005, Uzbekistan was included into Freedom House’s “The Worst of the Worst: The World’s Most Repressive Societies”
Still, I can’t really see Republicans having a problem with McEwen’s lobbying for foreign dictatorships given the activities on behave of such nations as Saudi Arabia by the Bush clan and their allies.
On the plus side the McEwen campaign issued a press release stating that most of the candidates that ran in last years special election are backing him for Congress. Included in the release were Doug Mink, Eric Minamyer, Tom Brinkman, and Steve Austin. The most surprising endorsement comes from Eric Minamyer who was a big backer of Jean Schmidt when she was running against Paul Hackett.

OH02, your missing the big point: the voting in Ohio while not even having any kind of residence in Ohio, and using the addresses of other people as if they are your own.
If true, and it’s difficult to see that it’s not, we’re talking vote fraud:

. . . blah blah blah . . . Editor, stop thinking/talking like a Democrat. . . all this ‘residency’ ‘lobbying’ and ‘endorsments’ talk doesn’t matter . . . the R primary and most likely the general come down to 2 words . . . you know what they are . . . let’s say them together . . . ‘Clermont County’.

Tom, personally all of the OEC legal back and forth reeks of politics to me. Candidates live in multiple places all the time; Dick Cheney and George Bush for example. If the BOE has a problem let them make their case and follow through. McEwen is a Washington lobbyist from the area. Washington lobbyists need to be near Washington. SHOCK. Isn’t that why you’d vote for McEwen? Cause he’s a player who can bring back the pork for the 2nd. He’d become the 2nd’s lobbyist instead of Uzbekistan’s.
As for Schmidt I think that she can legally claim anything she wants. I don’t like courts getting into free speech issues unless absolutely necessary. If either is a liar and you’ve got a problem with that the solution is to not vote for them. The fact that all this junk comes out at election time by opponents makes it seem like political gamesmanship.
Personally I don’t get why y’all would want to vote for either one of them. Just looks like more of the same to me.

They weren’t living here, and didn’t even have a place here, and they voted. That’s not a campaigning violation, which is what all of the OEC stuff has been up to now, it’s a balloting violation, which is a CRIME no matter how you look at it. It goes straight to a prosecutor with no pit stop at the OEC.
Forget that he’s a candidate for a moment. If you or I did what he’s doing and were caught, we would be prosecuted as criminals, not mere election law violators.

I’ve actually talked to a lawyer about just this issue over another candidate. (I’ll let you guess). They said that they’ve neve heard of this being made into a legal issue. It’s all politics.
Me, I see crimes being committed every day. Lets play a game where we could all the laws broken that are never enforced. That should be fun.
Still, you’ve got a case… go for it. It’s not important to me, but I could see it being a big deal to others. As a far left pinko I try to keep my opinions of things to myself. A lot of good they’ve done me.

Just because the Bushies are too stupid to use it doesn’t mean it’s not true.
