Sherrod Brown was in Dayton this morning meeting with people to discuss the aftermath of the Hackett affair. Len @ Blogesque and SusanD @ Howard Empowered People documented the event. No recordings were allowed.

I wonder why no recordings were allowed? What does Brown have to hide?

It is interesting that Sherrod Brown heard the rumors about Hackett from Dan Lucas. That tidbit makes you go…ummmhhh.

Funny how that worked out.

“New York gays and Hollywood elites.”
Anyone else find this comment extremely distasteful and downright stupid (especially given that Sherrod’s whole candidacy was propped up the party elites?)
I really hate this guy.

Sorry- to provide some context. It’s from Len’s Blogesque entry.
“Brown said that Hackett’s main fundraising sources were ‘New York gays and Hollywood elites’ (I think that was the phrase), and that “of course” his campaign contacted these groups and tried to convince them to give money to him rather than Hackett.”
Of course it’s okay to tamper with people’s fundraisers! Why not?! Duh!

He must have lusted after that hot gay fundraising action.

Reading both post makes one realize (if you haven’t already) that Sherrod is a charade. He is arrogant, elitest, and impervious to what is REALLY going on in the Ohio Democratic grassroots. He totally dismissed the poll which showed that he had drop in Democratic support.
He appears tone deaf.

So much opinion I can barely stomach it!
In campaigns, some events are off the record, it’s normal and really nothing to be critical of.
Has anyone here ever met this Dan Lucas? You throw his name around as though he’s your long lost enemy. Seriously.
Even Len said that she didn’t know if that’s what he said or not. Sherrod Brown has been an hardcore supporter of gay-rights and he was making a very distinct point: No one has their own set of donors. He can ask whomever he’d like for a contribution - and in many cases hackett’s supporters said hey, Sherrod is our guy instead of Hackett. That’s politics.
The poll taken by Rasmussen was taken in one day. I do not believe from what I’ve read that it is statistically competent - esp. because it was taken the day Hackett went out and bashed the hell out of democrats on national television and radio.
The poll he mentions is his poll from December that had him 30 points ahead.
And of course, when Hackett’s own poll showed him down 22 points, that’s when he got out of the race.
Knock knock!
Who’s There?
Someone who isn’t drinking the Hackett Kool-Aid!

I never said Sherrod Brown was anti-gay. I said his comment was distasteful and stupid- which it was.

If you can’t stand it, what the hell are you reading this blog?

whew…sooo touchy…Hmmm I sense a sensitive spot. One doesnt have to meet a person to find out their history (as we’ve learned this week) especially when one has such a nice little paper trail.
peculiar…’He told me but I told him not to say nothin.’ Pitiful. Dig that grave deeper and deeper baby.
February 23rd, 2006 at 9:26 am
I agree Ann…and they worried about Hackett’s mouth.
February 23rd, 2006 at 9:31 am
Ann,
I read that remark about gays and Hollywood elites and had exactly the same reaction, which is why I wish recordings had been allowed. It would have been nice to have heard the tone and content, because this sounds like a dismissive Republican remark. Is he planning to move to the far-right like Petro, because this sounds like something Petro would be pulling out of his trick bag. Surely, he can’t have meant it the way it looks on paper. This seems out of character.

Oustudent,
You are losing Brown votes every time you speak. Your aggressive contempt for anyone who ever supported Hackett translates to “We don’t want your stinkin’ vote.” I doubt Brown will be feeling that way in November. I’d suggest you seriously cool it. There wasn’t a single thing in your post that would be persuasive to someone going “I just am not sure I can support Sherrod Brown” and everything in it would be likely to drive that person away.

“You are losing Brown votes every time you speak.”
Exactly! Keep talking, OUstupent101.

Gays and Hollywood elites? That sounds like the kind of rhetoric that’s spewed by the likes of Hannity and Rush, not by the “true progressive”. Is there any other demographic in the Democratic Party that Brown can piss off? Jeez, tone deaf indeed.
February 23rd, 2006 at 11:43 am
Americain, I asked about that in the comments at Howard-Empowered, and Susan said that wasn’t quite what he said, but that was the gist, but it wasn’t said with any disdain. The truth is, if Brown had allowed people to record the event so that his exact words could be on the record, we could know for sure. Too bad he didn’t allow that.
February 23rd, 2006 at 7:11 pm
I have posted the following clarification:
I had thought I made it clear right up front that I was going from memory, and this is why I wanted to record the damn thing in the first place. You see, he did indeed say those things, but he may have said “New York gays” in sentence 1 of his answer and “Hollywood elites” in sentence 2. Having them strung together inside one set of single quotes was apparently a lousy way to write it out, and I’m going to edit that for clarity. As a gay man, I also want to reiterate that Brown’s remarks absolutely did not come across as derogatory in any way. It was more along the lines of ‘those groups should be on my side, because I’ve been on their side longer than Hackett has.’ Oh, and that isn’t a quote either, although it does convey Brown’s meaning and intent. I don’t need to make shit up to bash politicians with; they provide more than enough material on their own. My admittedly poor use of punctuation and any resulting miscommunication can be laid at my feet, not Brown’s. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

OK, the formatting got blitzed, but you get the idea. The original is here:

You know what REALLLLLY pisses me off. The whole ‘If you live in Ohio then you know what you have to do’ bit. I mean what a condescending asshole. I don’t have to do nothin but stay black and die. He might as well have said ‘Kiss the ring bitches’ I mean do you really take that tone with people. Do you really go there if you’re trying to get elected? I mean defending yourself against the BS is one thing but this is becomming less about Hackett and more about what a completely ugly man Sherrod Brown really is.
February 23rd, 2006 at 7:34 pm
dammit I cant the Italics thingie to end. grr
February 23rd, 2006 at 9:35 pm
Don’t worry about italics, dear lady, just keep right on talking. And I do mean TELL IT! We need someone to lead a Fighting Democrat movement within the Democratic Party. We need to purge this infection within the party before we can battle with integrity the Republican candidates. If Paul Hackett is unwilling to lead this Fighting Democrat (ahem) insurgency, well then, I want to personally nominate Mrs. Editor.
February 23rd, 2006 at 11:40 pm
Republicans may let their party get hijacked by crap they dont believe in but these here Democrats are NOT going down like that. I’m sorry but if they think we are just going to turn a blind eye to the very treachery we despise in the republicans they are a tiny bit mistaken.
