Ohio Honest Elections has interesting details from Sunday’s Candidates’ Night with Congressman Sherrod Brown:
Reader email regarding last night’s meeting with Sherrod Brown: “A Candidates’ Night with Congressman Sherrod Brown” as the main speaker, sponsored by the Upper Arlington Progressive Action group, proceeded smoothly until a young man rose and asked why Brown was running against Major Paul Hackett after assuring the Iraq veteran that he had no intention of challenging DeWine’s senate seat. The questioner was concerned about a primary struggle, with Democrats fighting Democrats instead of Republicans. Brown responded that circumstances changed his mind, that Hackett had also changed his mind after once saying that he would go back to Iraq if he lost his bid for office. Hackett is presently on military maneuvers and not responding to anyone.
After that, the moderator tried valiantly to keep the agenda on discussion of “Reform Ohio Now.” However, there were other questions relating to concerns over a Democratic primary between Brown and Hackett. As soon as the meeting was adjourned, lively confrontations erupted pertaining to citizen concerns around two excellent candidates engaging in mortal combat that should all be directed toward defeating Mike DeWine in 2006.
Unfortunately, even though there were numerous front row seats reserved for media, no reporters seemed to be present to observe the defensiveness of the Brown defenders and insistence that, if there was a primary, it would all be Hackett’s fault. But they were sure Hackett would agree to running for another office, and within a couple of weeks there would be no more questions, since they were absolutely positive Brown would be the superior candidate, and everyone would be happy about it.
Hopefully, Sherrod Brown may profit from this experience since there is no doubt that he is just beginning to realize the serious divisiveness of the situation.

Mr. Brown must of been sipping the Minimyer kool-aid.
For Sherrod Brown’s sake lets hope democrats have the attention span of a piss ant and are as fickle as he is.

If Brown is to be a serious candidate, his approach to PR needs to improve a lot.

As someone who was present at the event, I can say that is a gross distortion.
There was one question about the primary, followed by several questions about GOP corruption, followed by a woman who wanted Sherrod Brown to support phonics in schools.
Rep. Brown’s answer to the question wasn’t very defensive, IMHO. He said that he changed his mind because of changes in his family and Congressional situation-his daughter had just gotten married, his other two daughters were starting college, and his wife is a journalist and had been concerned about the impact of his run on her job. Those issues are now resolved, and his family supports his run.
He didn’t say anything negative about Hackett, and I don’t recall him accusing Hackett of flip-flopping or mentioning his military service, period.

just beginning to realize the divisiveness of the of the situation????? How did his advisors not see this coming? How did someone like Tim Tagaris who is all over the blogs and blogged about the Hackett campaign not give Sherrod a heads up on what the reaction would be?
They (the Brown camp, pro Brown bloggers and the Dem establishment) also need to revisit their post announcement plan. The pressuring of Hackett to drop out and hinting that a divide in the party would be the responsibility of Hackett if he stays in is just insulting.

Editor, can you somehow confirm the facts on this for us?

I did send Sherrod a package of my special blend, but I told him to save it for the general election. LOL
Hackett did pledge to go back to Iraq if he lost. The 5th CAG rotated out recently but Paul did not go. He is so brave to stay here and take on the establishment, be it Dem or Rep.
I hope Hackett stays in. This is fun to watch.

CJ,
Good idea. I’ll start asking around. I’ve marked this as rumor. Even with video it’s hard to capture all the dynamics of that.

There is now a post by the person who asked the question up on GrowOhio. He had this to say:
Sure. He responded by saying that several personal matters involving his family had been recently resolved. There were other issues that he couldn’t address publicly. I believe he mentioned that one of the issues involved his wife who is a member of the media. I thought he addressed the questions very thoughtfully and I had no reason to doubt his sincerity.
I felt that Congressman Brown gave a fine presentation and it was clear to me that he has a masterful grasp of the issues. You can’t help but like the guy as he is right on the issues I care about. Several of my friends in attendance were impressed as well. My position is that we have two fine candidates now and are being forced to choose between them which can lead to divisiveness and create a lack of unity. I hope both campaigns can avoid this and concentrate on running positive campaigns.
