One of the hardest things about covering this special election has been your humble editor subjecting himself to the daily rants of WLW arch wingnut shock jock Bill Cunningham. Today he was in top form. Cunningham called Hackett a baby killer for being pro choice. His favorite point of the day was comparing Hackett to such other famous marines as Lee Harvey Oswald and Timothy McVeigh. Class act.
UPDATE: I’ve been told that McVeigh was actually Army, although I’d almost swear he was on Cunningham’s list. I’ll check the audio tomorrow. sigh…

Bill Cunningham called a returning war veteran a “baby killer?” Why does Bill Cunningham hate America?

One other thing I wanted to write about the show yesterday. Cunningham used an interesting phrase to critique what Hackett has said about President Bush. He talked about how he had “blaspheemed” against the President.
I’ve written before about attempts by some to paint the government in sacred terms.

In case you wanted an instance of someone calling
Now I will admit, this right wing guy didn’t call Ohio congressional candidate Paul Hackett a baby killer because of his service to our country. But that still does not make Hacket a baby killer.

You characterization of Cunningham’s remarks is predictably wildly off the mark.
Cunningham’s argument was this:
- Paul Hackett is running for Congress.
- Paul Hackett is saying “vote for me ONLY because I served in Iraq.” (we can argue whether or not Paul is doing this; I think he essentially is, as his site for example doesn’t state his views on life issues).
- Being a soldier is not an automatic qualifier for Congress, as Hackett implies.
- He named soldiers who would NOT have been qualified for Congress (McVeigh, Oswald, etc.).
He was NOT “comparing” Hackett the person to Oswald the person, and you know it. He even SAID he wasn’t comparing them as people, but you went ahead and said he was. Not your finest hour in a final few days that have been nobody’s finest hour.
